Office of Renewable Energy Siting and Electric Transmission
Overview

The mission of the Office of Renewable Energy Siting and Electric Transmission (ORES) is to consolidate the environmental review and permitting of major large-scale renewable energy facilities and major electric transmission lines in New York State into a single forum that provides a coordinated and timely review of siting permit applications.

All large-scale, renewable energy projects 25 megawatts or larger are required to obtain a siting permit from ORES for new construction or expansion. Transmission lines outside of New York City also must obtain a permit from ORES if they meet or exceed one of the following thresholds:

  • Transmission lines extending at least one mile with a capacity of 125 kV or more, or
  • Transmission lines that are 10 miles or more in length and have a capacity of at least 100 kV.
