DPS Featured Occupations
Utility Consumer Program Specialist (UCPS) 1 and Trainee positions participate in community outreach and consumer education programs, including staffing exhibits at public events. Utility Consumer Assistance Specialist (UCAS) 1 and Trainee positions help resolve consumer utility complaints such as service disconnections and billing issues throughout New York State.
Auditors at DPS investigate the financial activities of public utilities, familiarize themselves with utility company accounting practices, prepare audit plans and scoping memos, communicate audit findings, make recommendations for audit adjustments, and conduct financial examinations applying accounting principles and auditing standards.
Policy Analysts at DPS perform a broad range of analytical tasks relevant to the evolution, modernization, decarbonization, regulation, and reimagining of the New York State energy and utility industries. Tasks may include research, program development, planning and oversight, policy development, analysis, forecasting, and audits.
Utility Analysts at DPS perform a broad range of analytical tasks relevant to the electric, steam, gas, water and telecommunications utilities on issues such as retail competition; tariff filings; company records; cost and quality of service; rate proceedings; incentive plans; mergers and acquisitions, cost allocations and rate design.
As a full-time employee, you earn 13 days of paid vacation leave during the first year of employment, with added bonus days on completion of years 1 through 7. After seven years of New York State service, your vacation leave increases to 20 days annually. You also earn five days paid personal leave and 13 paid holidays annually. Paid sick leave varies depending on negotiated contracts with employee unions.
As a State employee, you and your family can choose from a variety of quality health plans available at an affordable, low premium cost through enrollment in the Empire Plan or Health Maintenance Organizations (HMOs). You are also provided family dental and vision plans at no cost through either a union Employee Benefits Fund or a State-administered program.
The New York State Employees’ Retirement System is designed to provide income after retirement from State service. The plan also provides supplemental benefits such as loan privileges, disability retirement benefits, and death benefits for eligible employees. The amount of pension is determined by total years of service and final average salary.
