DMM Help: Case Number/Matter Number Format

Case

A Case is a set of related issues to be decided by the Commission at a public meeting.

Example case number: 99-X-1234

Case numbers have the following parts:

  • They begin with the last two digits of the year they were opened. (e.g. 99)
  • A dash (-)
  • A letter indicating the service type for the case
    • C - Communication
    • E - Electric
    • F - Facility
    • G - Gas
    • M - Miscellaneous
    • S - Steam
    • T - Transmission
    • V - Cable
    • W - Water
  • A dash (-)
  • A four digit sequence number that will be reset to 0001 for the first case of the year.

 

Matter

A Matter is a set of related issues to be examined or decided by the Department, without the need for a public meeting.

Example matter number: 99-12345

Matter numbers have the following parts:

  • They begin with the last two digits of the year they were opened. (e.g. 99)
  • A dash (-)
  • A five digit sequence number that will be reset to 00001 for the first case of the year.
